McGraw International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, opened in 1992, is named in honor of Beryl "Brownie" McGraw, long-time PSD educator.
McGraw offers the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in grades K-5. IB promotes the development of international-mindedness and the education of the whole child-academic, emotional, social, physical, personal, and cultural. The PYP encompasses a balanced program of knowledge, concepts, attitudes, and skills, which prepares learners to be successful in a changing and interrelated world. This program provides a foundation for students to continue in the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programs.
McGraw's learning environment is inquiry-based, engaging students in the construction of understanding through their questions, research and reflections. Building on district standards, teachers create units that highlight the transdisciplinary nature of learning. McGraw houses the district program for deaf and hard of hearing students. All students receive instruction in Spanish language skills. Teachers are highly trained in differentiation of instruction, use of inquiry, Positive Behavior Support and Response to Intervention.
Instructional & Enrichment Programs
McGraw offers full-time and three-day kindergarten. A broad range of research-based instructional interventions are used to meet individual learning needs and fully challenge and support each student.
Enrichment programs include Odyssey of the Mind, vocal choir, bell choir, Geography Bee, student council, running club, spelling bee, chess club, Chinese instruction, homework club, Lego Robotics, student news show, International Night, local art shows and student-initiated community service opportunities.
McGraw provides optional fee-based before- and after-school childcare for students.
Opportunities for Parents
McGraw volunteers log an average of 650 hours per month. The Parent/Teacher/Student Organization's fundraising efforts help purchase classroom enrichment materials and provide high-quality field trips and assemblies. Parents are represented on McGraw's School Improvement Team.
