Learning Culture
We believe in adjusting learning activities to address individual learning needs, styles and interests. By using various techniques and groupings to challenge students, we strive for all children to achieve their full potential. We hold high expectations for respectful behavior.

Academic Environment
To better prepare our students for the 21st century, we are strengthening our program to foster inquiry-based learning through the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We also value the inclusion of arts, wellness and the use of creative and critical thinking skills while remaining focused on the essential skills in all curriculum areas. Our diverse student population naturally prepares students to be global citizens. Nearly 15% of Shepardson students are identified as having learning challenges, and 6% qualify as English Language Learners, representing about 10 different languages. Approximately 22% of our older students qualify for Gifted Education Plans for reading and math..

Our program must be engaging and address students' diverse needs all day long. Philosophically, we strive for every child to feel included. Accommodations, remediations, and extensions are made in the classroom where students learn naturally to value differences in themselves and others.

Instructional & Enrichment Programs
Extended learning opportunities are offered beyond the regular school day and include support for homework and literacy as well as coordinated learning instruction with BASE Camp. Extracurricular activities, such as our nationally recognized O Ambassadors Club, student council, choir, weekly Spanish, track and chess clubs, Lego Robotics teams, and academic bees enhance both learning and leadership.

Opportunities for Parents
Parents are integral partners in the learning process by helping at home and in the classroom. They also serve on school committees, such as the School Accountability Committee which helps make decisions about school goals, staffing, budgeting and instructional improvement.
