Poudre High School opened in 1964 and is the second oldest comprehensive high school in Poudre School District, PHS underwent major renovation and remodeling in 1994-95.

Learning Culture
PHS offers more than 250 courses designed to meet a broad spectrum of choices and needs. The classroom environment and curriculum are enhanced through rigor, relevancy, and relationships.
Weekly class schedules include eight 80-minute periods rotating throughout the week. We encourage, support, and prepare students for opportunities and success in AP course work, IB classes, and dual enrollment in Colorado State University and Front Range Community College.

Academic Environment
PHS is one of three North Central Accreditation Transition Endorsed schools in Colorado and received "Exemplary" ratings at the National NCA Conference. PHS articulates with feeder schools from Pre-K-12 to successfully transition every student from home to school, school to school, and school to career.

Instructional & Enrichment Programs
Beginning in the 9th grade and continuing in the sophomore year students develop a five-year plan with the fifth year being the year beyond high school.

  • Freshman/Sophomore Seminar-A year-long, required course providing students with tools, strategies, and skills needed for success in high school and throughout life (i.e., study skills, time management, personal health and organization).
  • The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) is a four-year accelerated, honors curriculum. The IB organization's diploma program is a demanding pre-university course of study that leads to examinations and is designed for highly motivated secondary school students.
  • The Advanced Placement (AP) program provides the means for colleges to grant credit and/or placement to students who test successfully on examinations. A student earns high school credit for AP classes and can qualify for college credit.
  • Middle Years Program (MYP) provides an academic challenge and life skills for students aged 11-16 years in preparation for the IB Diploma program.
  • Poudre Pathways After Hours is an alternative program offered from 3:30-6:30 p.m., M-Th, for students who need additional academic options. General Education Diploma (GED) program is available for students seeking a GED diploma.
  • Sophomore Academy is an intense course for selected sophomores.
  • Newcomer Academy provides extensive support to our English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Capstone Experience is available to any student who wishes to create and complete a community-based, career-oriented project. A capstone is a self-initiated, self-paced, independent research project that affords students the opportunity to receive school credit while researching and focusing on a topic of special interest to them.
  • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is designed to help students succeed in a rigorous curriculum taking responsibility for their own education and future plans.

Extracurricular Activities
Activities for students include Ambassadors, cheerleading, drama, theatre, debate/forensics, instrumental music, vocal music, Kaleidoscope magazine, National Honor Society, newspaper staff, Poudre Peer Connections, Poudre Business Leaders, Poudre Pals, Renaissance, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), student council, yearbook, Robotics, Science Olympiad, Science Bowl, athletics, and numerous other student led organizations.

Student and Staff Achievements
PHS students have distinguished themselves in local, regional, and national programs such as the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) contest for Kaleidoscope, ASPA Best High School Artist awards, and athletics. In addition, Poudre students have numerous individual state and national championships: National Scholastic Gold Key state and national-Art; National Space and Science Foundation Award; Arts Recognition; National Talent Search; Promising Young Artist Award; all-state choir, band, and orchestra members; Science Olympiad Team first in state and regional champions; National Merit Scholars; National Ocean Science Bowl; Science Bowl; and Ocean Bowl. In 2007, the Ocean Bowl team won the national championship.

All staff are highly qualified and certified educators who are recognized yearly for their expertise and talents. This staff has led PHS to be recognized yearly since 2003 by Newsweek magazine as one of the top high schools in the nation!

Opportunities for Parents
Parents volunteer in a variety of ways, including providing support for sports teams, music, drama, Parents of Poudre Students (POPS), Moms-in-Touch, the alumni and parent board with the PSD Foundation, parent/teacher conferences, IB parent advisory board and after prom committee.
PHS Site-Based Management Team members provide input about budget, goals, and accountability. This team consists of parents, students, certified, and classified staff.
